Vaasa, in western Finland, is largely a coastal town. This town of approximately 58,000 inhabitants is referred to as the sunniest spot in the country.
Though Vaasa lies along the coast, it is one of the driest regions of Finland. Summer is the best time to visit with temperatures averaging above 20°C. Winter is very cold and temperatures drop to below freezing point for most of the season.
The first library of Finland was founded in Vaasa. Currently, the city has three universities and a large student population.
Most of the original city was destroyed in a fire in 1852; only 24 buildings survived the fire. The city was then redesigned and reconstructed. Earlier, Vaasa’s economy largely depended on the ship building industry and tar trade. Today, it is a flourishing industrial centre.
