The city of a thousand fountains, Aix en Provence is situated in the Provence region in Southern France. Built on hot springs, the city was founded in 122 BC by a Roman consul. During the middle ages, it became the capital of Provence county and the centre for art and learning.
With more than three hundred days of sunshine, this city enjoys a moderate temperature and the 137,000 inhabitants can enjoy their beautiful city all year round. Though summer is the peak of tourist season, spring and winter are also good times to visit.
Some of the main economies of the city are extraction of olive oil, wine-making and the manufacture of the famous Calissons sweets. With its many thermal springs, it was also famous for its Roman baths.
