The renowned painter Paul Cézanne lived and painted in the city and there are brass ‘C’s set into the ground throughout the city to mark places of importance associated with him.
The city holds many festivals throughout the year, the most famous of them being the International Festival of Lyric Art in July, and the Dance Festival.
The main attractions in the city, as much for their architecture as for their history, are the Cathédrale Saint Sauveur which has artefacts dating back to the 4th century, the thermal springs, the fountains and the Palais de l'Archêveché. Also, close to the Cours Mirabeau is the church of Saint-Jean-de-Malte, built in the 13th century. Aix en Provence has nearly 10 museums dedicated to art and history.
