Avignon: Vacations and Tourism

Avignon, in southern France, is home to approximately 89,000 inhabitants. Almost as many tourists visit this town every year. With an increasing number of artists and musicians living here, the town is emerging as a popular centre for art and culture.

Avignon has a Mediterranean climate. Summer is the best time to visit as it is pleasant and there is no rain. July is the warmest month with temperatures reaching as high as 29°C. The strong mistral wind plays the occasional spoilsport in the weather. Winter is mild with an average temperature of 5°C.

Avignon’s period of glory was from 1309 to 1377—the Avignon Papacy. During this time, it was the seat of the pope. The seven popes who resided here contributed largely to its development.
