Deauville: Attractions and more...
Most visitors come to Deauville to soak up the sun on its beautiful beaches, to bet on horse races or to gamble at the casino. The Casino in Deauville, the third largest in France, stands on the seafront and is one of the main reasons for the huge number of visitors to this town. The beach is flanked by a 643-metre long hardwood promenade. The Pompeian Baths along the beach were rebuilt recently but the original feel has been maintained in the mosaics and arcades.
Mont Canisy is the site for a bunker and a maze of underground passages used by the Germans in World War II; these have been restored for public viewing. The Villa Strassburger and the villa Les Abeilles are the two grand examples of architecture.
The Hippodrome Deauville-La Touques, a race track for thoroughbreds, hosts the annual Ventes de Deauville in mid-August. This auction of thoroughbred yearlings is considered to be one of the best of its kind.
