Caen, in the north-western part of France, is located very close to the English Channel. Besides being a popular recreational spot, this town of approximately 114,000 inhabitants is also a commercial port.
Caen enjoys a mild climate throughout the year, be it summer or winter. Spring is the best time to visit as the climate is most pleasant at this time. Summertime is also popular with tourists as the average temperature is 23°C. Average temperature in winter is 7.5°C but, at times, can drop much lower.
Caen suffered great destruction in the battle of Normandy and had to be rebuilt from scratch. Most of the buildings that survived were from the reign of William the Conqueror from the eleventh century.
Today, Caen is a modern cosmopolitan town, bustling with a large student population and hundreds of tourists.
