Tourist guide Calais

Calais, in the north of France, is at the narrowest point on the English Channel. It is also the main port for the vessels ferrying between the two countries. It has a population of approximately 75,000 inhabitants.

Calais’ enjoys the same climate as the south-east of England. The warm North Atlantic drift protects Calais from excessively cold temperatures; January is the coldest month with an average temperature of 2.8°C. Summer is the best time to visit; July is the warmest month with an average temperature of 18.5°C.

Calais was perhaps established as an ordinary fishing village. During British colonisation, it was titled ‘the brightest jewel in the Crown’ as it was England’s connection to European mainland, particularly for trade purposes.
