Carcassonne is located in the southern part of France, not very far from the Mediterranean Sea. This town of about 44,000 inhabitants is made up of two distinct parts: one, the old fortified city with the major tourist attractions, and two, the newer ‘lower city’, the commercial hub.
Carcassonne enjoys a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Spring is the best time to visit with the average temperature at 15°C. Though the average temperature in summer stays below 30°C, there are days when it gets very hot.
The Romans started the fortification of Carcassonne, as early as 100 BC. Over the centuries, all through the Middle Ages, various rulers of the area added to the fortifications, making it almost impenetrable. It was only in the eighteenth century that the city started developing economically.
