Le Cite, the restored fortified medieval town, is the primary attraction. The outer ramparts have an accessible walkway which is perfect for a walk around the fortified city. The inner walls enclose an area called ‘le chateau’, which houses several rooms and other structures.
The Museum of Lapidaire in the inner area displays an interesting array of items excavated during archaeological digs carried out over many centuries. The Basilica of Saint Nazaire is a combination of the Gothic and Romanesque style of architecture; its stained glass windows and rose medallions are especially noteworthy.
The Musée des Memoires du Moyen Age, showcasing the life of the townsfolk during the Middle Ages, and the Chateau Comtal, the highest point of ‘le Cite’, are the other significant attractions.
The Carcassonne Festival, held in July in the medieval city, hosts a range of theatre, dance and opera performances in the fortified city.
