Chambery, a town in the south-eastern part of France, lies nestled in a valley between two mountains. This town of approximately 56,000 inhabitants is especially popular with skiers and has been nicknamed ‘the kingdom of downhill skiing’.
Chambery enjoys a continental climate, with warm summers and cold winters. The average temperature in winter ranges from 0°C–10°C, with heavy snowfall in the mountains. The temperature in summer ranges from 20°C–30°C, but summers can get really humid.
Historically, Chambery has held a strategically important position because it is the gateway to the Alps and to Italy beyond. The town prospered through the Middle Ages when it became the capital of the Savoy region. Today it is a ski resort town during winter and attracts hikers, climbers and cultural tourists in the summertime.
