Chamonix, in eastern France, is located at the base of the Mont Blanc peak. This village of 10,000 inhabitants is one of Europe’s most popular sports resort. Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympics Games in 1924.
Though the slopes of the Alps are very sunny, the temperature during the winter months rarely rises above 0°C. Chamonix has a long skiing season from November to April. Summers are cool and sunny with the average temperature at 15°C.
Till the end of the Middle Ages, Chamonix was a dull town with little activity. The inhabitants began annual fairs to attract more visitors, but were not very successful. It was only in the latter half of the eighteenth century that the first visitors went to Chamonix to explore the surrounding slopes.
