Besançon is the capital and the principal city of Franche-Comte in east France. It is in close to Switzerland and is the capital of the department of Doubs.
It had a population of 220,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area in the year 1999. 2004 estimates show the population as 114,900/
It is situated at the edge of the Jura Mountains and is surrounded by six other hills which range in elevation from 400m to 500 m. it covers 1,652 square kilometers.
Besançon is under the influence of both an oceanic climate and a continental climate having hard winters and dry summers. The warmest month is July with 66 degrees Fahrenheit and the coldest month is January with 35 degree Fahrenheit. This city receives annual precipitation of 44 inches.
One of the cultural events held here is Besançon Franche-Comte Music Festival held in September. This festival is the oldest and the most prestigious Classical music festival.
