The grand Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris was commissioned by Bishop Maurice de Sully in 1160 and was a work in progress over the next few centuries. During the Revolution, which started in 1789, Notre Dame was a target of the Parisian revolutionaries because of the favored relationship that existed between the Catholic Church and the French monarchy. The Cathedral's spire, the statues from the Gallery of the Kings and the statues at all major portals were destroyed by angry crowds. In a final blow to the Catholic hierarchy, the cathedral became the property of the civil authorities,defitenely a place to visit in the City of Lights!Then The Eiffel Tower is one of the internationally recognized icons of Paris that is a must-see for first-timers. Even those who have been to the top of the Eiffel Tower before, rarely miss a chance to view this soaring monument from one of the surrounding vantage points!Stroll until the the Champs Elysées; a magnet for romantics and one of the most visited streets in Paris. The entire area is imbued with a "movie scene" quality that continues to enchant visitors to the City of Lights!
