This historic building is a Roman Catholic basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is situated at the summit of the butte Montmartre, the highest point in the city. This 19th century basilica is traditionally associated with the beheading of the patron of the city, Saint Denis, in the 3rd century. The foundation stone of the basilica was laid in 1875. It was consecrated in 1891 and was complete by 1914. By 1919, it was elevated to the status of a basilica after First World War ended.
