Versailles was conceived by an absolute monarch, Louis XIV - ‘The Sun King’ ,and was very modern by 18th century standards. It has a rational, symmetrical layout of streets and was a model for the building of Washington DC.
It has never been a centre of industry but remains a place of local administration, tourism, congresses, and festivals.
