Versailles is located 17 km south-west of the centre of Paris, and is now an elegant suburb of Paris, the capital of France. It is situated on a plateau, 135 m above sea-level and is surrounded by forests and wooded hills.
Versailles grew from the forecourt of the world-famous Château de Versailles (Palace of Versailles) and today has a population is estimated at around 86,000 inhabitants.
Versailles was conceived by an absolute monarch, Louis XIV - ‘The Sun King’ ,and was very modern by 18th century standards. It has a rational, symmetrical layout of streets and was a model for the building of Washington DC.
It has never been a centre of industry but remains a place of local administration, tourism, congresses, and festivals.
