The Old Port, or the Port Vieux, is the historic centre of the city of Marseille.
The city in the past witnessed many historic maritime battles and activities, as it is the largest Mediterranean port.
The Old Port has many historical buildings and museums which are major tourist attractions. Visitors can take the famous ‘fil de l’histoire’ walk.
The walk starts at the tourist information point very close to the old port. Using the information leaflet supplied and following a red line, tourists can visit the best attractions of the city centre.
The complete walk around the city takes about two hours at an easy pace.
The only other town to have an opera house outside Bordeaux is Marseille. The opera house is a 16th century picturesque building. It hosts a variety of performances by the biggest names in the world of opera.
Bookings have to be made in advance at the opera house. This mix of the historic and cultural makes the port of Marseille a must for visitors to France.
