Obernai is a charming town with its wooden houses, preserved from the medieval times, and narrow streets. The Place de l'Etoile, the town’s main square, the Town hall, with a very unique façade, and the neo-Gothic-styled church of Saint Peter and Paul are the town’s major attractions.
A large part of the ramparts from Obernai’s original fortification are still intact and serve as a good walkway around the town. A Renaissance-styled ‘well of six buckets’ and the Kappeltrum Belfry, an ancient watchtower, are the other points of interest.
The villages of Rosheim, picturesque with many centuries old buildings, and Ottrot, known for its red wine, make for interesting one-day trips from Obernai. It is possible to hike up to the Mont Sainte Odile from Ottrot. A chapel, the burial site of the Sainte, is a popular pilgrimage even today.
The city of Strasbourg is not much further away and is worth a visit for its towering Notre Dame Cathedral.
