Tourist Guide Le Mans
Le Mans may be known today as the host of the famous 24hr endurance motor race held in June since 1923, but aside from motor sport, Le Mans has much to offer visitors and tourists.
Evidence of the Roman occupation can still be seen today in the walls of the cities amphitheater built in the 3rd Century AD. The cities walls are a further example of the history of Le Mans, and are some of the best surviving examples of Gallo-Roman city walling in the Loire region.
Some of the cities main sights include the Cathédrale St-Julien and the well preserved old town quarter with its half timbred buildings and cobbled streets. The lush, rolling Loire countryside and beautiful gardens 'Jardin des Plantes du Mans' will provide visitors with the opportunity to enjoy some outdoor activities, while if the weather is grey you could head to the 'Musée de la Reine Bérengère' to absorb some of the city's history.
As you are close to the Champagné area, dont forget to try some of the local wine and Champagné at the many vinyards situated around Le Mans.
The city is at it's busiest around summer and especially the famous 24hr motor race - where many race fans camp around the famous 'Circuit de la Sarthe' race track and enjoy the racing and all-night parties. If you intend to visit during the race, book well in advance!!!!
