Located on the bank of river Loire the city of Nantes is situated in Western France at a distance of 50 Kilometre from the Atlantic coast. The metropolitan area is the eight largest in France and the city come is the sixth largest. Capital of the Pays de la Loire region and he Loire-Atlantique department the city has played important role in the historic province of Brittany.
The total population of the city in 2008 was 804,833. The city was named as "the most livable city in all of Europe" by the Times magazine in 2004. The name of the city come from the Gaulish tribe called the Namnetes who used to reside in the region in the pre Roman era. The city is also known as the Venice of West.
The place has mild summers and cool winters as it is situated near the coast. The rainfall occurs of regular basis giving the city a temperate climate. At times, the winter temperatures are freezing and summer may be very hot especially in July.
