La Rochelle's main attraction is the "Vieux Port", which is at the heart of the city, lined with a busy and picturesque scene, fishing boats and seafood restaurants.
Boating trips can be taken from the harbour to the Ile d'Aix and the internationally famous Fort Boyard.
The Town Hall or Hotel de Ville, located in the center of La Rochelle, is a richly decorated Renaissance building and has many picturesque old houses.
To the North is Venise Verte, a marshy area of country, criss-crossed with tiny canals and a popular resort for inland boating.
Towards the northward end of Rue Chaudrier, there is the Jardin des Plantes (Botanical Garden), with the Fleuriau Museum (natural history) and the Lafaille Museum, A little way to the west of Rue Gargoulleau, there lies the municipal art gallery and the Municipal Library named Musee de Peinture.
