The Palais des Papes—the world’s largest Gothic palace—was the official residence of the seven popes during the Avignon Papacy. Some of the palace rooms are open for public viewing. The Notre Dame Des Doms stands out because of its elaborate vaulted ceiling, its Baroque galleries and a gilded statue mounted on the top. This Gothic cathedral houses some tombs built in the honour of the popes.
The Festival of Avignon spans over the last three weeks of July and the first week of August. The town is engulfed in music, art and theatre, and the streets are full of energetic revellers.
The Pont Saint-Bénézet was built over the River Rhone to connect Avignon to Villeneuve. Today, although most of the bridge has collapsed and only four out of its twenty-two arches remain, it is still a picturesque sight.
Villeneuve-Lez-Avignon is a sleepy town across the river. As it is less developed and has the feel of a medieval village, some prefer to stay here while they explore the city of Avignon.
