Chambery’s prime attraction is the Gothic-style Chateau de ducs de Savoie. The entire town was built around this white-stone castle, and it still dominates the skyline. The Sainte Chapelle within the castle is a little run down but the beautiful stained glass windows are still intact. It also contains Europe’s biggest carillon, a musical instrument of 70 bells; this instrument is played on the first and third Saturday of each month.
Another famous attraction is the Fontaine des Elephants, a towering, extravagant memorial. Musee Savoisien, showcasing the town’s history, is known for some rare wall paintings. The town’s Museum of Fine Arts has mostly the works of Italian artists on display.
Aix-les-Bains, renowned mostly for its thermal spas, is not too far from Chambery. The Lake of Bourget, France’s largest natural lake, is also in the vicinity.
