Chamonix’s main attraction is the facilities for adventure sports. While most visitors visit this town to access the nearby skiing slopes, adventure sports like hand gliding and mountain climbing are equally popular.
The Mer de glace, a glacier, can be accessed from Chamonix by the Montenvers railway, a mountain train which winds its way through the steep slopes of the Alps. The Aiguille du Dru, in the vicinity, is known to be a challenging climb for most mountain climbers.
One can choose from a variety of cable car excursions: one, to the Aiguille du Midi for a view ... More of the White Valley and another, to le Brevent from where one can see the Mont Blanc. A combination of cable car rides and mountain rails connects Chamonix and Courvayer in Italy; this picturesque journey takes almost an entire day to complete.

Chamonix, in eastern France, is located at the base of the Mont Blanc peak. This village of 10,000 inhabitants is one of Europe’s most popular sports resort. Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympics Games in 1924.
Though the slopes of the Alps are very sunny, the temperature during the winter months rarely rises above 0°C. Chamonix has a long skiing season from November to April. Summers are cool and sunny with the average temperature at 15°C.
Till the end of the Middle Ages, Chamonix was a dull town with little activity. The inhabitants began annual fairs to ... More attract more visitors, but were not very successful. It was only in the latter half of the eighteenth century that the first visitors went to Chamonix to explore the surrounding slopes.
