Batumi is the capital of Adjara, an autonomous republic in the south-western part of Georgia. This town of approximately 121,000 inhabitants is a popular seaside resort town along the Black Sea. It also serves as an important commercial centre through its port.
The city enjoys a subtropical climate. Summer is the best time to visit with the average temperature at 21°C; July and August are the hottest months. Winter is mild with the average temperature at 7°C. January is the coldest as well as the rainiest month.
Batumi was fortified during the Middle Ages while it was a part of Georgia. It was only after the collapse of the USSR, that Adjara managed to establish its own autonomous state. Though, Adjara has its own system of governance, it is a part of Georgia for most practical concerns, like, visas, language spoken, etc.
