Batumi is largely visited for its beaches and the sunshine along the coast of the Black Sea. Swimming, sailing, diving and other sports facilities are available at the beach. The waterfall almost right in the middle of the city is a popular spot, especially during the summer since it is open for swimming.
The town also has some interesting monuments. Especially of note, are the Stalin Museum, dedicated to the Russian leader, and Adjara Museum, a window to the Abashidje family and the period of its autonomous rule. The Botanical Gardens, along the seafront, are home to more than 5,000 species of flora from around the world. The St. Mary’s Cathedral is a unique structure with several turrets jutting into the sky; it is lit up at night.
Gonio Fortress, a 2000-year-old military settlement of the Romans, is in the vicinity; an Apostle is also supposed to have been buried here.
