The Black Forest is a wooded mountain range in the south west region of Germany which is bounded by the Rhine valley to the south and west.
The forest has a large number of fir and pine trees but a lot of the area has been destroyed due to logging and development of the tourism industry.
There are numerous cross country skiing routes and mountain biking areas in this region.
The Baden Baden region is said to be the gateway to the Black Forest and is set on top of a widespread underground hot springs system.
One can see cows, ostriches, black forest foxes - actually a type of horse - and Lumbricus badensis a typical earthworm found in this region.
There are several lakes, waterfalls, mountains and towns in the forest. The Triberg Waterfall and the All Saints Waterfall are 2 of the popular waterfalls of Germany found here.
Vogtsbauernhofe is an open air museum and shows the life of farmers and a number of renovated Black Forest farms.
