The main spas are near the Stiftskirche. The Friedrichsbad was built in the 1870s with elegantly tiled rooms. The complete three-hour experience leads through shower rooms, saunas, hot and cold baths, and ends with a 30-minute siesta. Visit the remains of one of the original Roman baths beneath the building.
The Trinkhalle, a neo-Renaissance building, contains a mineral-water fountain and the town’s tourist office. Next door is the Kurhaus, dining rooms and Europe’s oldest casino - Dostoevsky lost his family fortune here (as described in ‘The Gambler’).
In the Kurhaus-Kolonnaden there are elegant shops leading on to the Lichtentaler Allee with 40-hectares of formal gardens, tennis courts and exotic flora.
In the town centre is the medieval Town Hall, the Gothic Stiftskirche church, and the imposing Neues Schloss Castle.
Along the river there are delightful old bridges and the Kloster Lichtental monastery.
