Reviews Egyptian museum
The Egyptian Museum in Munich is very good at what it does, it isn’t quite a world class tourist munching institution like those you might find in London, Paris or New York, but it does house a diverse selection of artifacts from the early, middle and late kingdoms through to the Hellenistic, Roman and Coptic (Egyptian Christian) eras..
There are mummies, amulets and statues galore as well as everyday items such as pottery and ancient textiles. Read a well-preserved papyrus copy of the Book of the Dead or letters written to Pharaoh Amenophis IV on rock tablets.
There’s lots of fascinating stuff to be learned here, from how the ancient Egyptians handled death to how they applied makeup and brewed the world’s first beer. Or you can spend your time looking at Coptic art, mummy portraits from the Roman period or sarcophagi from various epochs. The erotic art illustrates the ancient Egyptian penchant for exaggeration and is itself well worth a visit, and a giggle.
Admission is €5 / €4 and Sundays €1 for the permanent exhibition.
