The Museum Villa Stuck in Munich, Germany is great for several reasons.  It was built by Franz von Stuck in 1897/ 1898 in order to combine luxurious interiors with an impressive artist’s studio and private living quarters.  At the time it was celebrated as a modern, albeit unconventional sensation, at the Paris World’s Fair in 1900, the furniture which the artist had designed specially for his villa was awarded a gold medal.   Nowadays the building is host to the museum collections which draw crowds every year principally for exhibitions of art from around 1900 up to the present day.

A student of Von Stuck’s once described the museum building as “frighteningly wonderful”, its overriding principle being that of a “Gesamtkunstwerk”, all of a piece, the amalgamation of life, architecture, art, music and theatre into one aesthetic whole.
