The Paläontologische Museum München ("Palaeontological Museum Munich") is one of Germany’s foremost national natural history museums and is to be found in Munich, Bavaria. Housed in a grand mansion - the former urban college of arts and crafts - it is a fascinating place to visit for many reasons. First amongst these for me are the massive dinosaur skeletons standing tall in the centre of these magnificent big rooms, as if they’ve just been frozen there.
The building itself is beautiful and a great place to wander around for the day. The coffee shop is good and so if you have the time you should plan on exploring this place for at least half a day.
The museum is associated with the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität and has a large collection of fossils of animals and plants such as Mesozoic reptiles, early elephants and saber-tooth tigers. One of its highlights is the specimen of the early bird Archaeopteryx which was discovered in 1991. To get here head to Richard-Wagner-Str. number 10, or 80333 Munich for the map application.
