Pinakothek der Moderne or “Gallery of the Modern” is (predictably) a modern art gallery which is situated in the heart of Munich.  Denounced by some as “the cardboard box” it is an innovative space designed by the German Architect Stephan Braunfels.  It was inaugurated in September 2002 after seven years of construction.  The rectilinear facade, dominated by white and grey concrete, is interrupted by large windows and high rise columns, the latter supporting the extensive canopied roof.

Each of the four corners of the building which are connected by a central rotunda, is dedicated to a special collection.  The Museum is therefore divided into Art (Kunst), Architecture (Architektur), Design (Design) and Works on Paper (Graphik).  Interestingly this museum managed to avoid the Nazi party’s suppression of modern art and art galleries and so has an unusually long and rich tradition on display (if there is such a thing as a long and rich tradition about modern art...then this is it!).
