The Museum Island has been granted the UNESCO National Heritage Site status in 2000. This site was especially designed to be a sanctuary of science and art. The name, Museum Island is the name of the north half of an island in the Spree River situated in the central Mitte district in Berlin. It received its name for five internationally renowned museums which occupy the north side of the island. These museums are the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Bode Museum and the Pergamon Museum.
