Alexanderplatz is a large public square and even a transport hub in Mitte district of Berlin. The residents often call it Alex which refers to a larger neighborhood. This square was originally a cattle market named in honor of a visit of the Russian Emperor Alexandra I to Berlin in 1805. There has been a lot of development to this area with the construction of station and public market in the 19th century.
