Munsterplatz is the largest square in Freiburg which is home to the architecturally beautiful Freiburg Cathedral.
This square was founded in 1200 and restored several times thereafter. Residences for senior clerics were built around the Munsterplatz in the Gothic style and this spacious square was used for holding tournaments, processions, festivals and grand parades.
These days it holds a market every day except Sunday and is a quiet residential quarter of the elite of the town. The local vendors and farmers sell fresh food products like olives, cheese, meat, herbs, flowers and handicraft here.
The Munsterplatz is the liveliest area in the city as there are many department stores. The Beethoven Memorial, the cathedral and the main post office are situated here.
There are a number of events which are held here all through the year including fairs, rallies, festivals, craft markets and the huge Christmas market as well. The main station and the tourist information centre are also located close to this area.
