The Hamburger Kunsthalle museum owes its existence to an initiative taken by the Kunstverein in Hamburg. This building was founded in 1817 and as a public municipal painting gallery in Borsenarkaden in 1850. The collections became popular and it became necessary to provide a separate building to house it. In 1860, through finance of donations, this museum got opened. It also has a library.
