With so much focus on today's high-profile business and finance dealings,
the cultural destination of Frankfurt Rhine-Main is unfortunately often overlooked.
Frankfurt has been a fixture on the tour schedules of international performers
for many years. "schauspielfrankfurt", for example, creates excitement
with a theatrical repertoire that includes everything from classics to modern
works.
Its regular programme is augmented by premieres, matinee performances,
discussion forums and surprising offers for night-owls. If you prefer something
more down to earth, you will surely enjoy the countless folk fairs and street
festivals, such as the popular Wäldches Day, Frankfurt's very own public
holiday, which is celebrated in the City Forest on the Tuesday following Whitsuntide.
Every summer, Frankfurt's museums and the River Main are thrust into the limelight
for three days with the immensely popular Museum Embankment Festival.
Attracting
more than three million visitors per year, Frankfurt's premier outdoor event
has become one of Europe's premier cultural festivals. The festival offers arts
and crafts stalls, choir and organ concerts, variety shows, live music and -
lest we forget - a magnificent line-up of museums.
Speaking of which, a tour
of Frankfurt's "museum row" is a worth-while undertaking any time
of the year. Pay a visit to the famous Städel Art Institute, home to one
of Europe's most significant art collections, the Museum of Applied Arts or
the fabulous German Architecture Museum - you won't be disappointed.
Only a
stone's throw from the Main River one finds the Römerberg old town centre,
home to Schirn Art Hall and the Frankfurt Art Association, two establishments
that have gained fame with their changing exhibitions.
