The summer season from May to September is crowded as people enjoy outdoor activities like swimming, hiking and cycling.
In winter, the skies can be gloomy and sunlight is rarely visible as sunset is around 3.30pm. Traveller's cheques and credit cards are accepted and the Euro is the official currency. Bargaining is rare in Germany except at the flea markets.
Private health insurance would be useful for longer stays as medical treatment is expensive.
Tourists may be victims of crime as they carry large amounts of cash but theft is more common rather than violent crimes.
There are certain unsafe neighbourhoods therefore one should take the usual precautions like avoiding late night travel and dark lonely streets as well as deserted areas. Although German is the official language of the region, English is widely spoken along with French and Danish.
Germans are usually very polite so greet them with a simple 'hello'.
