The original station building which was built in 1891 was torn down in favor of the new station building in early 1920s. This station building played a significant role in Germany in 1930s and 1940s. In 1980s, this station underwent major reconstruction and it got completed in 1985. The station is commonly used by a quarter million passengers each day and is therefore the fourth busiest station in Germany.
