South of the Alter Markt situated in Kiel and to the opposite of the railroad station is Sophienof. This is the cultural quarter inaugurated in 1988. This is a two story building housing the Municipal Gallery, named Stadtgalerie having periodic special exhibitions. There is also a municipal picture library, Stadtbidnerei, having loan of contemporary pictures. Moreover, this center also has conference and function rooms, restaurants and shops. This is a great place for hanging out with friends.
