Ephesus: Attractions and more...
St. Paul is believed to have written the book 1 Corinthians of the Bible in this city. St. John's Basilica, built over the supposed site of the apostle’s tomb in the sixth century AD, is located in the nearby town of Selçuk. There is also the House of the Virgin Mary, believed to be the last home of Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. The Church of Mary was built on this site after the visit of Pope Paul VI in 1967.
The ruins of the Temple of Artemis, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the World, are located here. The town still holds the reconstructed remains of the Library of Celsus, which was built in 125 AD by Gaius Julius Aquila in memory of his father.
The neighbouring town of Selçuk is known for its scenic beauty and annual festivals and events. The camel wrestling championship in January and the International Festival of Culture and Tourism in May are quite popular. Ephesus also hosts several performances as part of the International Izmir Festival.
