Imerovigli can be described as a conventional hamlet located on higher altitude. It’s also an ‘extension’ of Fira, Greece.
The name ‘Imerovigli’ has been derived from word ‘vigla’; meaning ‘day’. A ‘massive’ rock known as ‘Skaros’ lies right in ‘front’ of Imerovigli. Till the year 1800, Skaros had been a portion of land. It also has a ‘castle’ on it. This is the place wherein every administrative office of this island was located.
Imerovigli was nearly destroyed in the year 1956 due to earthquake. Also, its ‘cliff-edge’ houses had been abandoned. However, in 1970s, tourist trade began once again. At present, Imerovigli holds the reputation of being a quiet and gorgeous hamlet. It’s also known as one amongst the topmost regions in Greece with regards to accommodation.
