Kalavrita: Attractions and more...
Kalavrita is the south terminus of the Diakofto-Kalavrita cogwheel railway. The train journey is a wonderful experience with the train climbing up the Vourakis Gorge.
Winter sports fanatics should visit the Kalavrita Ski Centre as it offers one of the best ski runs in Greece. Those with a penchant for history and archaeology should visit the Kalavrita Metropolitan for sites such as Ancient Loussi, Pausania’s vine-branch, the ancient town of Klitoras, the Castle of Oria and the Chelonospilia.
The picturesque town of Kalavrita serves as a good starting point for touring surrounding areas. The Holy Monastery of Mega Spileo, the most amazing shrine of the Eastern Orthodox Church in Peloponnese, lies not far from Kalavrita. The cave of Spileo ton Limnon is also very close to the town. It is the only cave in the world where ponds are layered on three separate levels.
