Tourist Guide Lesvos Island
Lesvos Island lies in the eastern region of the Aegean Sea in Greece. The capital of Lesvos is Mytilene.
The island is mountainous and has two high peaks, Lepetymnos and Olympus, both of which have similar heights. Lesvos is verdant and hence is often referred to as the ‘emerald island’. Majority of the land is covered with olives. The remaining area is occupied by pine and oak forests.
Lesvos experiences a typical Mediterranean climate. Winter is mild and short with heavy rainfall, while summer is hot and has very little rainfall. The average annual temperature is 18°C and average annual rainfall is 750 mm. The island is characterised by strong north and north-east winds.
The approximate population of the island is 90,000. Lesvos is predominantly agricultural and the main source of income is olive oil.
