The archaeological site of Mycenae has ruins from the second century BC. Part of the city walls and the Acropolis still remain. Thus, Mycenae has many such archaeological structures for the tourists to enjoy. The Lions Gate located at the entrance of the citadel is one such structure that stands out. The lions with their fore paws are symbolic of Mycenaean’s power.
Another impressive structure is Grave Circle A which contains six royal shaft graves.
The circle of graves housed the treasures that were buried along with the dead, known as Kterismata, most of which is now excavated and is displayed in the Archaeological Museum in Athens.
Once in Mycenae, tourists should not miss the Treasury of Atreus. It is located right across the citadel and is actually a large tomb known as ‘tholos’. The beauty of its arched wall and scale of the structure are awesome.
