The Mystras is a famous fortified town in the Morea region, also known as the ‘wonder of the Morea’. Earlier an amphitheatre, this place is now famous as a medieval ruin standing on a beautiful landscape.
Built in the fifth century, the Archaeological Museum is worth a visit for its collection of archaeological objects, Roman mosaics and statues. The rose garden of the museum is also a sight worth remembering.
The Geraki Castle is a beautifully preserved ancient construction with a three-aisled basilica. The interiors are stunning with mosaic columns and the walls bear various photographs of different leaders. A service is held annually to celebrate the feast day of the church’s patron, St. George.
Another interesting archaeological site is the Acropolis, which includes ruins of a theatre, a stadium and a sanctuary as well. Part of this site has been developed into a park where visitors can enjoy a day trip.
