The Byzantine Museum, preserving the artefacts from the Byzantine era, the Thessaloniki Archaeological Museum, displaying a collection of findings dating back to the Neolithic times, and several other museums can be all found in the centre of the city.
The Rotunda was built as a mausoleum; it then served as a church and is now the site for concerts and exhibitions. It boasts of a beautiful collection of mosaics. Aghios Dimitrios, a church, contains a crypt, some sculptures and other Byzantine treasures. A copy of the original Aghia Sofia, in Istanbul, has also been made here.
The White Tower, a part of the original fortifications, was once known as the Bloody Tower as this was where executions took place; today, it is a museum and the city’s symbol.
There are several beaches and resort town along the Halkidhiki peninsula which make for good trips from Thessaloniki.
