The island has almost 200 churches, a few castles and even a monastery; it also boats of hundreds of species of flora. Of all the Greek islands, it is one of most unspoilt and least affected by commercialisation
Megalo Chorio, the island capital, is home to several ruins of the ancient city of Tilos. Kharkhadio Cave is the site of many archaeological digs; a lot of evidence of the area’s history was excavated from here. The Monastery of Ayios Pandeleimon was constructed on the Mount Profitis Ilias; it recounts the history of the area through its displays.
Tours in glass bottom boats are available to see the marine life. The island is also a birdwatcher’s haven as it is home to more than 100 species of birds. Out of these, 26 are of the endangered variety. The waters around the island are also home to some rare species of reptiles which are not typically found in Europe.
