The Museum of Ethnography is one of the oldest Hungarian institutions. From the 1890’s, the museum began to focus of preserving the history of Hungary and helping safeguard the disappearing value of nation’s culture.
The first entire collection that the museum put on display was the East Asian collection of János Xantus. With the number of things on display being around a quarter of a million, today the Museum of Ethnography in Budapest boasts one of the largest collections in all of Europe. The museum presents temporary displays as well as permanent exhibitions. A few temporary exhibitions that have been received well by the public include Ferenc Liszt and "gypsy music," and Women, Hand-Woven Rugs, Home Industry. The popular permanent display is The Traditional Culture of Hungarians. The museum also hosts several events, including guided tours of the exhibits themselves, as well as various workshops for students and ethnography enthusiasts.
