A lot of care has to be taken of luggage when travelling on trains and other public transportation as there is always a chance of it being stolen. One also needs to be wary of pickpockets at all places especially in larger cities. Tourists should avoid walking alone on the streets at night. It is always good to be in groups.

Food and water in Hungary are considered safe enough for consumption. However, when in the outskirts foreigners should stick to bottled water. It is easy to find good hospitals and clinics in the country which are also not very expensive. Medicine shops are available almost everywhere but are a little expensive.

Leeches and ticks can be a serious problem in some of the areas and may lead to infections.

Tipping is practiced and most service providers (doctors, hairdressers, etc.) expect it. One needs to be cautious when speaking about the country’s past, involving the World Wars, Communist period, etc.
