Tourist Guide Sopron
Sopron is located in the northern part of Hungary, close to the border of Austria. This town of approximately 56,000 inhabitants is one of the country’s premier winemaking regions.
Sopron enjoys a pleasant climate. The average summertime temperature is 25°C; July and August are the warmest months. January is the coldest month with the average temperature at 5°C.
Sopron was an old deserted Roman city when the Hungarians got here. The city walls were strengthened and a palace was built. At the end of the Middle Ages, a fire destroyed most of the city. The city was rebuilt in the prevailing Baroque style and most of its medieval architecture was lost. At the time of the divide of Hungary and Austria, the citizens of Sopron voted for Hungary, earning it the title of ‘the most loyal city’.
